Thailand Is Back-to-Back RWC Champion

For the second straight year, Thailand and South Korea squared off in the finals of the Ragnarok World Championships.

And just when South Korea seemed poised to avenge its loss when it raced to a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five finals, Thailand remained calm and won the last two rounds to become back-to-back RWC champions.

This was the first time that the RWC was being held outside South Korea, the home country of Ragnarok Online developer Gravity. The Philippines played host, with Level Up! making RWC 2008 part of this year’s edition of its annual Level Up! LIVE online gaming event at the World Trade Center in Pasay City.

Defending champion Thailand broke the hearts of Filipino fans in the morning of Day 2 of Level Up! LIVE when it ousted Team Philippines, 2-0, in the first semifinals match to end the host country’s quest for the gold.

Representing the Philippines was the first back-to-back winner of the Ragnarok Philippine Championships, Bozanian Beastfighter of Baldur server. Bozanian Beastfighter appeared invincible during the RPC, and had Filipino fans at the World Trade Center and those watching the live video stream and following the action on the Live Blog wildly cheering as they swept their matches with Germany and Japan to reach the semifinals.

Thailand, however, proved too tough for the valiant Philippine squad, which now found itself on the losing side of a 2-0 sweep. Meanwhile, South Korea defeated Indonesia in the second semifinals match to set up a grudge match with Thailand.

The Philippines fought Indonesia in the sudden-death battle for third, but failed to match its third place finish in RWC 2007 when Indonesia emerged victorious.

The RWC 2008 finals was a thriller that was truly worthy of being called a championship match, as both teams gave it their all and had equal chances of taking home the gold. Thailand took Round 1 of the best-of-five finals, but South Korea bounced back and won the next two rounds to take a 2-1 lead to move just one round away from bringing home the championship.

Thailand, however, refused to buckle under the pressure and tied the match at 2-all, thus sending the epic battle into a fifth and deciding round. Thailand again proved to be South Korea’s nemesis, emerging once more as champion with a 3-2 come-from-behind victory.
